GitHub Copilot: AI for code becomes a product for everyone
In one sentence GitHub announces general availability of Copilot for all developers at $10/month. It's the first mass-market AI tool living inside the daily code editor.
GitHub Copilot had been in beta for a year: an assistant that, while you write code, suggests the next line. On June 21, 2022, it becomes a real paid product, open to every developer in the world. Price: 10 dollars a month.
It's the first time generative AI lands every day in the work of millions of professionals. It runs inside VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim. You start writing a function, it completes half the work.
From that day "AI for code" stops being a hypothesis and becomes part of a programmer's setup. Every copilot that followed — Cody, Cursor, Tabnine, Codeium — was born in this wake.
