DALL-E 2 enters beta: generative image AI for the public
In one sentence OpenAI opens DALL-E 2 in beta to over one million waitlist users, with a pay-per-image credit system. First large-scale consumer product for image generation.
DALL-E 2 had been unveiled in April but only to a few invitees. In July OpenAI opens it in beta to a million people from the waitlist, and introduces a credit system: every user gets a number of free "generations" per month, then pays.
It's the move from "academic experiment" to "product you can buy". From now on image generation stops being a paper-paper curiosity and starts entering real workflows: designers, marketers, hobbyists, illustrators.
A few days later, in August, Stability AI will respond by releasing the Stable Diffusion weights. The race is on.
