Character.AI: persona chatbots from ex-Google founders
In one sentence Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, fathers of LaMDA, launch Character.AI: a platform letting anyone create and chat with AI characters, from Einstein to anime personas.
Two Google engineers leave to start a company. Not any engineers: Noam Shazeer is one of the seven authors of "Attention Is All You Need", the paper that invented Transformers. Daniel De Freitas is the lead engineer on LaMDA, Google's chatbot.
They launch Character.AI: a website where anyone can create a "character" (Einstein, an anime heroine, a motivational coach, your imaginary friend) and chat with it in a consistent style. Conversations can be saved, shared, evolved.
Months before ChatGPT, Character.AI pulls millions of teenagers and becomes one of the most-used AI sites in the world for entertainment. It opens a market that will be called "companion AI".
