Stability AI — the people behind Stable Diffusion — publishes its first open-source language models: StableLM 3B and 7B, with 15B-65B versions promised.
The license is CC BY-SA 4.0: permissive for commercial use, with attribution and share-alike obligations. That's important: Meta's LLaMA 1 came out two months earlier but research-only, so unusable for companies.
Quality-wise the benchmarks are middling: StableLM 7B struggles against LLaMA 7B on practical tests, and the demo chatbot quickly produces confused outputs. Still, it's an early signal that the open space is filling up: over the next 12 months Falcon, MPT, RedPajama, OpenLLaMA, and finally a commercially-licensed LLaMA 2 will all ship.
