At Google I/O 2023, Sundar Pichai unveils PaLM 2: the model that immediately takes LaMDA's place inside Bard. It's smaller than the original PaLM (540B parameters) but more capable, thanks to a richer training mix — 100+ languages, scientific papers, 20+ programming languages.
Bard suddenly speaks dozens of languages, does math better, and understands code. Google announces four animal-named sizes — Gecko, Otter, Bison, Unicorn — designed to run anywhere: Gecko on smartphones, Unicorn in the datacenter.
