Palantir AIP: first public LLM agent demo on classified operational data
In one sentence First public demonstration of an enterprise LLM agent on real, sensitive operational data: military logistics routing via natural language. AIP sandboxes LLM outputs from raw data access. A turning point for AI in defense and government.
Until now, the core problem with AI in military and government contexts was straightforward: how do you use a powerful language model — possibly trained elsewhere, its internals opaque — on data you absolutely cannot let leave your secure network?
Palantir answered with AIP, the Artificial Intelligence Platform, demonstrated publicly on May 16, 2023. In the demo, a military operator asked in natural language to optimize logistics routing in a real operational scenario. The language model responded and made decisions — but never directly accessed raw data.
The key is a sandboxing layer: the LLM only receives the information needed to respond, already filtered and abstracted by the underlying Palantir platform. Classified data never touches the model. The model cannot exfiltrate it because it physically never has it.
For defense, government, and enterprises with ultra-sensitive data, this pattern — LLM agent plus data sandboxing — has become the reference blueprint for all AI projects on sensitive operational data.
