Microsoft Build 2023: Copilot everywhere, a shared plugin standard
In one sentence At Build 2023 Microsoft announces Windows Copilot, Copilot in Edge and 365, and adopts OpenAI's plugin standard. Strategy: 'AI co-pilot' as the primary UI.
At Build, Satya Nadella declares Copilot is no longer a single product (GitHub Copilot) but a "stack strategy". The headline is Windows Copilot: a side panel inside Windows 11 that understands natural commands ("arrange these windows", "read this PDF and summarize it") and can take system actions.
In parallel Microsoft adopts the same plugin standard OpenAI announced in March. That means a plugin written for ChatGPT also works in Bing Chat, Edge, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Windows Copilot. For developers it's a single distribution channel to hundreds of millions of users.
Microsoft Fabric is also announced: a unified data platform (data lake + warehouse + ETL + BI) meant to be the "data plane" under enterprise Copilot. The message: Microsoft wants to be the default AI infrastructure for businesses.
