Llama 2: weights become commercially usable
In one sentence Meta releases Llama 2 (7B, 13B, 70B) under a license that allows commercial use up to 700M MAU. For the first time a serious LLM is genuinely deployable to production without depending on an API.
Reading level
Five months after LLaMA 1, Meta ships Llama 2. The biggest news isn't only technical: this time the license allows commercial use in products, for free, up to very high user thresholds.
It means a company can take Llama 2, put it on its own server, and run an internal assistant or a customer-facing app on top of it, paying nothing to Meta and sending no data to OpenAI.
From now on, "self-hosted LLM" stops being an experiment and becomes a real architecture choice.
