Pika 1.0: text and image to video for the mass market
In one sentence Pika Labs launches Pika 1.0: a consumer platform for video generation from text or image, region animation, and aspect ratio control. Reaches 500k Discord users. Funded by Khosla Ventures at $55M.
In November 2023, AI video was still the domain of Runway — expensive and pro-oriented. Pika 1.0 changes the audience: anyone can generate 3-second video clips by typing text, using an image as a starting point, or animating only specific zones of a frame.
The interface — initially Discord-only, then web — is designed to be immediate. No technical setup, no advanced prompt engineering. Upload a photo, write what you want it to do, get a video. Flexible aspect ratios (landscape, portrait, square) for different social platforms.
The result is not Sora — clips are short and sometimes have artifacts — but it's accessible, fast, and free at the base tier. Within weeks it becomes the most-used AI video app for the consumer audience. Khosla Ventures puts in $55M at that point.
