Boston Dynamics electric Atlas: hydraulics retired, industrial robot born
In one sentence Boston Dynamics retires the hydraulic Atlas after 11 years and presents its electric successor with greater-than-human range of motion and software APIs for industrial partners.
Hydraulic Atlas retired on April 16, 2024 with a farewell video recapping its 11 years of impossible acrobatics. The next day Boston Dynamics unveiled the successor: electric Atlas, a robot completely different in architecture but equally impressive in capability.
Instead of noisy, bulky hydraulic compressors, the new Atlas uses electric actuators that allow articulations with a greater range of motion than the human body — legs and arms can rotate in directions no human could manage.
The strategic shift is industrial orientation: Boston Dynamics announces software APIs for enterprise partners and a deployment program in Hyundai factories by 2025.
