Windsurf: Codeium launches its AI-native IDE with the Cascade agentic flow
In one sentence Codeium ships Windsurf, an AI-native editor (VS Code fork) with Cascade — an agentic mode combining context reading, multi-file editing, and shell command execution — competing directly with Cursor.
Codeium was already known for its AI autocomplete inside VS Code, a free alternative to GitHub Copilot. In November 2024 they make a bolder move: a full IDE built from scratch (like Cursor), called Windsurf.
The flagship feature is Cascade: a kind of "agent coworker" that chats with you but can also edit multiple files at once, run terminal commands, read project docs. The pattern is similar to Cursor Composer but launched 3 months later.
Strategically: Codeium pivots from "plugin for other IDEs" to "direct Cursor competitor." The IDE is free (with a paid Pro tier).
