Sora Turbo: ten months after the demo, OpenAI ships video gen to the public
In one sentence OpenAI ships Sora Turbo to ChatGPT Plus/Pro users: videos up to 20s, 1080p, image-to-video, remix, storyboard. Faster, less faithful version than the February Sora demo.
In February 2024 OpenAI had shown Sora demos — a model generating 60-second videos from a sentence — and everyone was breathless. Then silence for ten months.
In December 2024 Sora finally reaches the public, but in "Turbo" form: faster, cheaper to run, and slightly less polished than the original demo. To use it you need a ChatGPT Plus subscription ($20/month, 50 short videos) or Pro ($200/month, unlimited and up to 20 seconds 1080p).
Features: text-to-video, image-to-video (animate a photo), "remix" (edit an existing video with a prompt), and a storyboard to build multi-shot scenes. Not initially available in EU/UK due to regulatory issues.
Widespread criticism: the consumer version is clearly less powerful than promised in February, and arrives when competitors (Runway, Kling, Pika, Veo) have already filled the market.
