OpenAI Operator: browser-based agents go to production
In one sentence OpenAI launches Operator (research preview): an AI agent that performs browser tasks on behalf of the user. Visits sites, fills forms, books services. Available to US ChatGPT Pro subscribers.
OpenAI answers Anthropic's Computer Use with Operator: an agent living in a browser that does things for you. Say "book me dinner at 8pm in downtown Milan for 4", and Operator opens OpenTable, searches, selects, fills, asks for confirmation, finalizes.
Difference with Computer Use: Operator works only inside a browser (safer, more limited), and the user sees in real-time what the agent does. You can intervene at any moment.
Only for ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) and US-only at launch. But it's OpenAI's first agent that ships as a product, not just an API.
