Trae IDE: ByteDance launches the first fully AI-native IDE, for free
In one sentence ByteDance launches Trae, a full IDE (not a plugin) built from scratch with AI at the center: Agent mode rewrites entire files, Builder mode generates multi-file projects from specs. Free at launch, direct Cursor competitor.
Most AI tools for developers are plugins added to existing editors like VS Code. Trae is different: it is a complete editor, built from scratch with artificial intelligence as the central element of every aspect of the interface.
ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, built Trae with two main modes. The "Agent" mode lets the AI rewrite entire files, navigate the codebase, run terminal commands, and make coordinated changes across multiple files — all autonomously while the developer supervises. The "Builder" mode goes even further: describe a project's specifications and Trae generates the entire file structure, configuration, initial code, and tests.
The most interesting aspect from a commercial standpoint: Trae was completely free at launch, including advanced features that require a subscription in Cursor. ByteDance used this to aggressively enter the AI IDE market that Cursor had opened. It is built on a VS Code-compatible base, so developers can bring their favorite extensions.
