ChatGPT Agent: OpenAI merges Operator and Deep Research into a computer-using agent
In one sentence OpenAI launches 'ChatGPT Agent': fusion of Operator (browser use), Deep Research (long research), and classic ChatGPT into a single agent with virtual browser + terminal + API tools.
Reading level
OpenAI launches ChatGPT Agent, which is the fusion of three existing things:
- Operator (January 2025): an AI that uses the browser like you do, clicking and filling forms;
- Deep Research (February 2025): an AI doing in-depth research for 5-30 minutes, producing a detailed report;
- classic ChatGPT: the conversational model you already know.
The result: a single "ChatGPT Agent" that picks its own tool. Example: you say "book a pizza at restaurant X tonight at 8 PM", the agent opens a virtual browser, navigates the site, fills the form, confirms. Or: "research all Italian X suppliers and give me a comparison in Excel", and it returns an .xlsx.
Available to Pro ($200/month), Plus, and Team users. OpenAI is open about it: "ChatGPT can now do things, not just talk".
