MCP ecosystem 2025: Inspector, UI, registry, and cross-vendor adoption
In one sentence The Model Context Protocol, launched by Anthropic in November 2024, hits critical mass: GA MCP Inspector, MCP-UI for server-side UI, official registry, OpenAI/Google support. Becomes the 'USB-C of LLM tools'.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP), born a year earlier as Anthropic's standard to connect LLMs to external tools (files, databases, APIs), becomes adopted in 2025 by every major player: OpenAI integrates MCP in ChatGPT desktop, Google does the same in Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor, Cline, and thousands of MCP servers appear in marketplaces.
By late 2025 the stack is mature: MCP Inspector (the official debug tool for MCP server developers, finally stable), MCP-UI (an extension letting servers render custom UI inside the assistant), and a public registry to discover trustworthy servers.
For developers it's the moment when "write an MCP server once, all AI assistants use it". For enterprises it's the moment when "integrating AI with our internal systems" moves from "custom function calling per vendor" to "we write an MCP server".
