Claude Cowork: Anthropic's desktop agent for non-technical knowledge workers

In one sentence Anthropic ships Cowork as a research preview: a desktop agent with sandboxed shell and local file access, aimed at people who don't live in the terminal the way Claude Code users do.

Anthropic noticed that many people were using Claude Code (its terminal tool) for things unrelated to code: organizing folders, planning vacations, writing documents from files on disk. So they take that same power, wrap it in a desktop app with a graphical UI, and call it Cowork.

Cowork is an agent that lives on your computer. You hand it a task ("reorganize this folder of invoices by month", "write a report from these PDFs"), it opens a sandboxed shell, accesses only the folders you authorize, and works. Then it hands you the result.

What sets it apart from ChatGPT desktop or Claude.ai is that Cowork can actually execute code, create files, modify them, chain steps. It doesn't just talk — it acts.

Released as a research preview on Mac and Windows in January 2026, it's Anthropic's way of reaching the "knowledge worker" audience without asking them to learn the command line.
