OpenAI Operator GA: the first commercial autonomous web agent

Operator is OpenAI's agent that does things on the internet for you. It doesn't just give you information — it actually takes actions: books a restaurant table, buys a train ticket, fills out a form to renew a document, orders groceries online. You describe what you want in natural language, it opens a browser, navigates, clicks, fills in fields, and confirms.

Launched first only in the United States in late 2025, from January 2026 it's available in over 30 countries. For ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers it's accessible directly from the interface. It's the first autonomous web agent made commercially available by a major AI lab — not a research prototype, but a product anyone can use.

There are limits, of course: for critical actions like payments it asks for your confirmation, you can stop the agent at any time, and there's a log of everything it did. It doesn't always succeed on sites with aggressive CAPTCHAs or unusual layouts. But for repetitive browsing and form-filling tasks, it's a real paradigm shift: you delegate a task and it comes back done, without you having to sit there clicking.
