Think of how a child learns to pick things up: first a ball, then a cup, then a pencil. After thousands of attempts, the child grasps the general concept of "grasping" and can handle objects they have never seen before. Boston Dynamics has done exactly this with its Atlas Electric robot, but at an enormously larger scale.
The new manipulation foundation model was trained on 10 million hours of real robot experience, gathered from hundreds of Atlas units interacting with all kinds of objects. The result is a robot that can grasp and manipulate objects it has never encountered during training, without needing specific programming for each new case.
The real breakthrough is not just the technical capability, but the context in which it works: unstructured environments, meaning real-world spaces where things are not always in the right place, lighting changes, and unexpected obstacles appear. Most importantly, Atlas works side by side with human workers without protective cages or separate zones.
This system is already operational in Hyundai manufacturing plants, where Atlas collaborates with workers on assembly lines. It does not replace workers, but handles repetitive or physically demanding tasks, freeing people for work requiring judgment and creativity.
For the general public, this marks a turning point: industrial robots are no longer rigid machines programmed to repeat the same action forever. They are becoming flexible collaborators, capable of adapting to the real world.
