OpenAI releases Sora 2: 1080p 60fps, synchronized audio-video, and API-first for creative professionals

Picture a virtual film director that, given a simple text description, generates a high-definition video complete with perfectly synchronized music, dialogue, and sound effects — all in a single step.

After the consumer version of Sora was shut down in April 2026 amid user backlash (inconsistent quality, high costs, frustrating limitations), OpenAI came back with a completely redesigned version: Sora 2.

The quality leap is substantial. We are talking about Full HD (1080p) video at 60 frames per second — the same smoothness you see in a cinema — with clips that can run up to two full minutes. That is a major jump: previous systems struggled to maintain quality beyond a handful of seconds.

Perhaps the most significant new feature is native audio-video synchronized generation: the model produces sounds, voices, and music in sync with the visuals, without requiring separate post-production tools. Think of it as a virtual director with a built-in composer.

There is also inpainting and outpainting: you can modify a specific portion of an already-generated video, or expand the scene beyond its original frame boundaries — like Photoshop, but for video.

For now, Sora 2 is available only through an API (a technical access system for developers and companies), not as a direct app for general consumers. OpenAI has clearly chosen to target photographers, filmmakers, advertising agencies, and production teams rather than the mass market. It is a sharp strategic pivot that implicitly acknowledges the mistakes of the previous launch.
