Microsoft Build 2026: Copilot becomes the agentic OS layer for Windows

Imagine having a personal assistant that does not just answer questions but actually takes actions on your computer — opening apps, organizing files, sending emails, and completing entire tasks while you focus on something else. That is what Microsoft announced at Build 2026 with Copilot++.

Until now, Copilot was more like an advisor: it gave you suggestions, but you had to do the actual work. With the new version, it becomes a true autonomous collaborator built directly into Windows. It can understand what you are trying to accomplish, plan the necessary steps, and carry them out on its own.

For developers, GitHub Copilot Workspace has officially graduated from preview to general availability. Instead of just suggesting a single line of code, it takes an entire feature request, understands what needs to be built, creates a work plan, and writes the required code across multiple files at once.

Microsoft also updated its cloud AI platform with Azure AI Foundry 2.0, making it easier for companies to build and manage their own custom AI assistants. The Microsoft 365 Agents SDK lets organizations create AI agents that work directly inside Word, Excel, and Teams.

Finally, Phi-4.5 is Microsoft's new language model released for free as open source. Despite its compact size, it delivers impressive results and can run on less powerful hardware, making AI accessible to a much broader audience.
