AMD and Anthropic: 2-gigawatt Instinct MI450 partnership with up to $5 billion investment
In one sentence AMD and Anthropic announce a strategic partnership to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in Helios rack-scale systems, with the first gigawatt landing in the first half of 2027 and AMD investing up to $5 billion in Anthropic.
In AI, the real currency is no longer money but watts: how much computing power you can lock in for the coming years. On July 22 Anthropic secured up to 2 gigawatts of AMD GPUs — roughly the output of two large power plants, all dedicated to training and running the Claude models.
The deal works in both directions. AMD supplies its Instinct MI450 accelerators in Helios racks, its answer to NVIDIA's integrated systems; alongside the mega-order, it invests up to $5 billion directly in Anthropic. First large-scale deliveries are expected in the first half of 2027.
Why does it matter? Because until now almost all frontier AI ran on NVIDIA chips, with long waiting lists and prices to match. When a lab like Anthropic — which already uses Google and Amazon silicon — makes a big bet on AMD too, the accelerator market becomes genuinely multi-vendor, which over time means more available capacity and lower costs for everyone.
There is a neat detail as well: the two companies will collaborate using Claude to accelerate AMD's own software development. AI helping build the tools that will run AI.
