NVIDIA and six Wall Street giants: over $500 billion in third-party capital for AI factories

In one sentence NVIDIA announces independent financing platforms with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR to mobilize over $500 billion in third-party capital for GPUs and data centers. GPUs get treated as infrastructure assets with residual value, not depreciating IT hardware.

NVIDIA announced an alliance with six of the world's largest asset managers (Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR) to create financing platforms dedicated to AI infrastructure. The stated goal: mobilize over 500 billion dollars of third-party capital over time, meaning money from pension funds, insurers, and institutional credit, to build data centers and buy GPUs.

The problem the deal aims to solve is easy to grasp: building so-called AI factories costs tens of billions, and not even cloud giants want (or can afford) to carry it all on their own balance sheets. With these platforms, whoever needs compute can have it financed by outside investors, much as airlines have done for decades with aircraft: they do not buy the planes, they lease them from specialized firms.

The shift in perspective concerns how chips are viewed. CEO Jensen Huang summed it up with the line that in AI, compute is revenue: a GPU would not be IT hardware losing its value in three years, but a productive asset, like a turbine or a warehouse, that generates steady revenue, can move from one customer to another, and keeps a resellable residual value. To make the thesis credible, NVIDIA goes as far as backstopping up to 25% of residual value per deal.

For everyone else the news boils down to one question: if Wall Street too starts treating GPUs like highways or power plants, the AI race has just found a nearly unlimited pool of capital. Or, as skeptics warn, financial leverage is being built on top of hardware that ages faster than a turbine.
