Reranker

A secondary model that reorders the results of an initial search (vector or keyword) by ranking them on relevance to the query.

In practice

Typically you retrieve 50-100 candidates with a fast method, then let the reranker (e.g. Cohere Rerank, BGE) sort the top 5-10. It is one of the cheapest ways to lift the quality of a RAG pipeline.
