OpenAI puts a website online, chat.openai.com, where anyone can talk to an AI. It's free, it speaks any major language, and it answers like a person.
The model underneath is a version of GPT-3 fine-tuned for conversation and instruction-following. It's not the first conversational AI, but it's the first one normal people try and tell their friends about.
Five days after launch it has one million users. From that weekend on, every conversation about AI changes tone: it stops being "research" and becomes "I use it too".
