Three months after launching ChatGPT, OpenAI opens up the API for the model that powers it. The price is ten times lower than the previous GPT-3 model: $0.002 per thousand tokens (about 750 words).
In practice: for a few cents an app can call ChatGPT hundreds of times. Within weeks thousands of "wrappers" pop up — apps that put a UI on top of the API: customer service bots, summarizers, email assistants, Slack and Notion plugins.
In the same post OpenAI also releases the Whisper API, their open-source audio transcription model: $0.006 per minute. Transcription and captioning startups have to redo their price lists fast.
This is the moment when building on top of ChatGPT stops being an experiment and turns into a market.
