Runway Gen-1: text- and image-guided video style transfer
In one sentence Runway launches Gen-1: the first commercial model that applies a visual style from text or a reference image to an existing video, frame by frame. Precursor to the Gen-2/Gen-3 line.
Have you seen those videos where ordinary footage is transformed into impressionist painting aesthetics, comic-book style, or sci-fi film looks? Gen-1 is the model that made this possible in a controlled, commercial way.
Unlike models that generate video from scratch, Gen-1 takes an existing video and "repaints" it while preserving the structure — movements, depth, composition — but changing the visual style. You specify the style by typing text ("1970s Japanese watercolor style") or uploading a reference image.
Results are not perfect — temporal consistency between frames sometimes wavers — but for the first time an accessible commercial app enabled serious video style transfer. A clear signal that AI video was about to become a real market.
