Google has over 3 billion users working in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Meet every day. On February 14, 2024, Google flipped a switch and all those products received an AI assistant powered by Gemini — Google's newer, more capable model.

In Gmail you can ask the AI to draft a reply to a difficult email, adjust the tone, or summarize a long thread. In Docs you can describe what you want to write and receive a full draft. In Sheets you can request complex formulas in plain language without knowing the syntax. In Meet, automatic transcripts become summaries with action items.

Before this announcement it was called "Duet AI" — a name most people forgot. Rebranding it as Gemini had a significant psychological effect: it unified Google's AI model identity and made it recognizable even to users who do not follow tech news.

For companies already paying for Workspace, many of these features are included in existing plans. For those who had not yet tried them, this was the first encounter with generative AI in daily work.
