Devika: the first open-source alternative to Devin explodes on GitHub
In one sentence Mufeed VH publishes Devika, an open-source AI software engineer agent: accepts high-level programming objectives, decomposes them, searches the web, writes code and runs tests. First real open alternative to Devin. 15k GitHub stars in 72 hours.
When Cognition Labs announces Devin in March 2024, the software development world is fascinated but frustrated: it is all closed, waitlisted, expensive. Mufeed VH, a developer from Kerala (India), decides to build the open-source equivalent and calls it Devika.
The operation is similar: give it a goal ("build a web application to manage a shopping list with React and Firebase"), and it plans the steps, searches for documentation on the web, writes code file by file, and attempts to run tests.
It is not on par with Devin in terms of reliability, but it is free, open source, and you can run it on your own server. In 72 hours it collects 15,000 GitHub stars, a sign that the demand for an open software agent was enormous.
Devika opens a category: the open-source alternative to the proprietary software agent. After it come OpenDevin (later OpenHands), SWE-agent, and others.
