The most striking upgrade is in the hands: 45 degrees of freedom means each finger can move in many independent directions, much like a real human hand. Earlier industrial robots had far stiffer, more limited grippers. With this range of motion, Optimus Gen 3 can handle small components, tighten bolts, or place parts on an assembly line with precision previously limited to human workers.
The other headline feature is the robot's "brain." Tesla took the same artificial intelligence system that drives its cars — called FSD, or Full Self-Driving — and adapted it to control the robot's body movements. Think of it like taking an airplane autopilot and retraining it to operate a forklift: the underlying ability to perceive the environment and make decisions stays the same, but the physical context is entirely different.
Tesla's goal is to deploy 1,000 of these robots inside its own factories by the end of 2026.
