Checkpoint

A full save of model weights at a given point of training, from which you can resume or release as a final model.

In practice

During a training run, checkpoints are saved every N steps to recover from crashes and evaluate intermediate versions. When a lab releases an open-weights model (Llama, Mistral, Qwen) it is publishing a checkpoint. The word is often used as a synonym for "a downloadable model version".
